Estate Planning 101: How Complicated is the Process?
Good news, estate planning really isn’t that complicated. A refrain I often hear from my clients at the end of the process is “wow, that really wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” I have talked with so many clients who have used other estate planning attorneys in the past and had such a bad experience. A few common ways an attorney may make estate planning more complicated than it needs to be:
- An attorney tries to sell them a complicated plan they didn’t need
- An attorney has made the process overly complicated with several in person meetings just to create a simple will
- Some attorneys just simply do not follow up and finish the job
Hire an attorney you can trust
This is why it is important to hire an attorney with experience who is highly rated. I’m here to tell you, while you can get into the weeds with estate planning you really shouldn’t have to. The vast majority of estates, even large ones, are not overly complex. There are plenty of things that can necessitate complexity in your estate plan, but a good estate planning attorney will:
- Synthesize the information your giving them
- Listen to your goals and objectives
- Come up with a plan that is right for you and your family
Make estate planning easy with an experienced attorney
Often my estate planning clients come into our meetings with what I call “spaghetti brain.” They’re thinking about a thousand different things, they have personalities in the family to deal with, they have different types of assets they want to divide among their beneficiaries and have no idea where to start. It’s really fun to be able to walk them through the plan I’ve created and see their “lightbulb” go off.
In a nutshell, you tell me what you’ve got and your estate planning goals. It’s my job to go through your assets and family dynamics and create a plan that accomplishes these goals.
